What if Tom Waits, Jim Jarmusch, and Michel Gondry made a video for "Hoist That Rag"?

This may be weird, but one of the original inspirations for doing this blog dedicated to the 'Glitter and Doom' band was to try and put an idea out there on the Internet for Tom Waits to rerecord "Hoist That Rag" with this band since their live version is such a beautiful thing to behold. Omar Torrez brings a real Latin touch to this song along with the rest of the band, as they become more and more comfortable with the Latin rhythms as the tour goes on.

What if Tom Waits, Jim Jarmusch and Michel Gondry sat down together for an evening, drinking absinthe (yeah I know Tom doesn't drink anymore, just go with the concept!), and hashing out visual and story ideas for the auditory elements of the song?

Here's what I see in my minds eye: Using Michel Gondry's very creative visual effects (ie "The Science of Sleep" and "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" combined with a fun storyline, of pirates (the band) and Captain Tom fighting the stormy seas, other pirate ships, etc, all in an old time silent movie format (ie Georges Méliès 1902 film "A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la lune").

Tom's maracas start out the song live, almost with a "scratching an itch" rhythm and quality, so maybe one of the pirate characters (the band? actors?) just got bit by a mosquito, and he is scratching that to the sound of the maracas? Then Seth's bass line and Casey's percussion intro kick in. When you add Sullivan Waits conga hits, that could be the deckhand pirates mopping the deck, slamming their broomsticks down on the deck in unison with those hits.

The solo section tradeoff between Omar, Vincent, and Patrick to me evoke images of the ship they are on battling stormy seas (with dark purple night skies and lightning strikes, etc), fighting other pirate ships, and other assorted Pirate mayhem.

Since they're in Paris, France tonight and tomorrow, maybe Michel Gondry will be at one of the shows and start thinking about ideas ahead of time? Maybe someone in Tom's or Michel's camp will see this and get the ball rolling between them?

What do you guys think, what would some other fun video ideas be? Leave a comment!

Seth Ford-Young now listed on the antilabelblog.com site!

EDIT: Thanks to antilabelblog.com for quickly rectifying this situation after it was brought to their attention! We hope this finds you and your family well Larry, and it was great hearing you on guitar in Atlanta! =D

---Hoist That Rag!

Original post below...
-------------------------------

Larry Taylor is still listed as the upright bass player on the page that tomwaits.com points to ( http://www.antilabelblog.com/?p=290 ). I have tried leaving a comment on that page, as well as emailing the contact for the domain pointing out that Seth Ford-Young has been the bassist on this tour since a week or two into rehearsals (hope this finds you well during the family emergency Larry!).

Last week or so, they finally changed the "as of yet unnamed reed player" to Vincent Henry (yeah!), surely someone can do the same for Seth? Most journalists and bloggers are referring to what they see on the offical site when they write their reviews, and it just seems like someone somewhere can correct this so Seth gets his due.

Why Tom Waits has cojones part 2

I want to give a quick shoutout to the boys, and draw attention to the musicians help Tom bring forth one of the most incredible concert performances I have ever witnessed (twice this tour, unless anyone out there wants to get me tickets and airfare to Europe? =D)

I want to point out that this band was able to take on Tom's challenge of learning around 70 songs in less than 4 weeks, except Seth Ford-Young, who came in one week or so later after it was made apparent that Larry Taylor wouldn't be on this tour. Truly a testament to his own talents to walk the plank into a band that has already been jamming and building chemistry for over a week.

Add on top of that learning someone else's parts, each trying to put their own stamp on it, but while still paying respects to the original that is so revered. Oh, and in case you haven't figured it out yet, Tom is a very dynamic performer, never performing anything the same way twice (even successive nights). So this band must also learn to watch and listen for queues as Mr. Waits directs the band from his tiny carnival barker stage, sometimes adding parts unexpectedly on the fly.

Tom's music is of course rich in imagery, and by that, I mean the music and sound effects help tell the story that Tom is singing, howling and grunting forth from his lil' pulpit of funkiness. "I said a sound with more purple elephants. And no bells this time dammit!" You get the idea of what these guys are pulling off now?

I must also point out that while Tom is obviously challenging this group to new heights every night, he also seems to be recognizing the force of nature they are becoming, and is also rising to the challenge they present back to HIM! Each night Tom's voice, stage presence, creativity and level of personal inspiration seem to be consistently topping all expectations, and that's saying a lot when you look back the past 35+ years.

So here is a tip of rum to the band, road crew, and of course Tom, pulling off these amazing feats before (some of) our very eyes and ears!

Barcelona, Spain 1st night (2008-07-14) notes anyone?

Anyone have any comments on the musical performance of this gig? Pirates are plundering to know! How are the boys doing on 'Jockey Full of Bourbon'? Now that they are mastering the correct Pirate Latin feel of 'Hoist That Rag', how is 'Jockey' coming along? This is one song I have yet to hear live that I am absolutely dying to hear, so if any tapers out there can help me out. And remember kids, you can find it for free these days, so don't buy bootlegs on ebay or anywhere else, just official recordings and merchandise.

And now why "Tom Waits Has Cojones..."

Towards the end of Winter 2008, for a brief moment, It's noodly appendage dropped down and smack Tom Waits in the back of the head, causing him to look up to the heavens . At that moment he saw, the hydra constellation "blink" it's new form at him. In that moment he "felt" it. Any man who experiences that feeling, knows instinctively that action is needed!

And so action happened! For the 2008 "Glitter and Doom" tour, he enlisted a new band of pirates, that as far as I know, haven't sailed the "live" seas with Captain Tom before. Possibly dangerous waters considering the devotion of some fans of pirate crews past. (not that there's anything wrong with that, seriously much respect to previous band members and their fans).

But sometimes, for various circumstances, constellations change shapes and alter the pirate lore for evermore. A new pirate chapter is being written into the skies, and here is where you can be hip to it, AND be a part of it by leaving comments of your experiences so that I (and others) can live through them! I know the two nights I saw Tom Waits perform with this stellar band and light show (how come we haven't heard much from the fans on that aspect?!!!) raised the bar for what I expect from a live show, and I have seen a few in between plunderings!

Who knew pirates could polka?!!!

Auditorio Kursaal, San Sebastian, Spain Notes Anyone?

Does anyone have any notes on the band's performance after having a week off after the US Tour? Did Omar and Vincent steer even further into their middle eastern explorations being so close to Morrocco? Did Casey and Seth subliminally channel tribal energies and rhythms long lost? Did Patrick beyond his keywork, continue to paint the canvas with absinthean colors, you know the kind that fills in the picture and allows us to see the cubist painting in Tom Wait's brain at that exact moment on stage?

I have linked to the setlist provided by The Eyeball Kid. One of the best sites out there right now for all things Tom Waits. I don't intend to compete with that blog, only compliment it by looking from a different angle (the Glitter and Doom band)!

The ship sets sail on the European tour!

We are minutes away from the opening notes of the European tour. As such, I have started this blog, in order to honor the people sailing from port to port under the helm of the fearsome Norwish pirate captain Tom Waits. But no raping and pillaging here, just making love to our ears as we walk the plank, under the nighttime stars of the Hydra constellation, into the ocean of creativy that Tom and the band are sailing in. Sing Sing Tommy Shay Boys!

Seth Ford-Young - Upright bass
Vincent Henry - Saxophones, clarinet, harmonica, rhythm guitar
Omar Torrez - Guitars, banjos, mandolin
Casey Waits - Drums, percussion
Patrick Warren - Organ, keyboards, accordion, aural stimulation

Sullivan Waits - Assistant clarinet and percussion
Larry Taylor (on guitar on a few songs in Atlanta)
