What if Tom Waits, Jim Jarmusch, and Michel Gondry made a video for "Hoist That Rag"?
This may be weird, but one of the original inspirations for doing this blog dedicated to the 'Glitter and Doom' band was to try and put an idea out there on the Internet for Tom Waits to rerecord "Hoist That Rag" with this band since their live version is such a beautiful thing to behold. Omar Torrez brings a real Latin touch to this song along with the rest of the band, as they become more and more comfortable with the Latin rhythms as the tour goes on.
What if Tom Waits, Jim Jarmusch and Michel Gondry sat down together for an evening, drinking absinthe (yeah I know Tom doesn't drink anymore, just go with the concept!), and hashing out visual and story ideas for the auditory elements of the song?
Here's what I see in my minds eye: Using Michel Gondry's very creative visual effects (ie "The Science of Sleep" and "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" combined with a fun storyline, of pirates (the band) and Captain Tom fighting the stormy seas, other pirate ships, etc, all in an old time silent movie format (ie Georges Méliès 1902 film "A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la lune").
Tom's maracas start out the song live, almost with a "scratching an itch" rhythm and quality, so maybe one of the pirate characters (the band? actors?) just got bit by a mosquito, and he is scratching that to the sound of the maracas? Then Seth's bass line and Casey's percussion intro kick in. When you add Sullivan Waits conga hits, that could be the deckhand pirates mopping the deck, slamming their broomsticks down on the deck in unison with those hits.
The solo section tradeoff between Omar, Vincent, and Patrick to me evoke images of the ship they are on battling stormy seas (with dark purple night skies and lightning strikes, etc), fighting other pirate ships, and other assorted Pirate mayhem.
Since they're in Paris, France tonight and tomorrow, maybe Michel Gondry will be at one of the shows and start thinking about ideas ahead of time? Maybe someone in Tom's or Michel's camp will see this and get the ball rolling between them?
What do you guys think, what would some other fun video ideas be? Leave a comment!
